π Hi!
This week has been quite crazy for me! I've setup a Black Friday offer for my 3 courses, resulting in about hundred new students so far π³!
β
If you want to grab one of my course at half price, there is a bit more than 24h left!

- ggplot2-uncharted.comβ
- Matplotlib-journey.comβ
It made me pause and look back at everything I've built over 12 years of dataviz educational projects. I use these tools every day myself, so I thought they could serve you as well!
β
The graph galleries
Four websites covering R, Python, d3.js and React. Each one offers hundreds of reproducible chart examples with clear explanations.
Pick a graph you like, plug in your data and you are good to go.
β
They also include a curated section of the best and most advanced examples to show what each language can really do.
β
Dataviz Inspiration
Think of it as the Pinterest of dataviz. About 250 projects, filterable by chart type.
Last week I needed ideas for a client heatmap. I opened the heatmap page and instantly got several design directions.
β
β
β
The design game
I built this game after reviewing hundreds of student charts in the discord channel of my courses.
β
Many were solid but missed simple design basics like alignment, typography or spacing. The game helps you sharpen your eye and learn these rules in a fun way.
β
Can you guess which chart looks the best below? Left or right?
β
β
β
Data To Viz
Probably my biggest success so far. You describe your dataset and the tool recommends suitable chart types, with guidance on which option is most appropriate.
It is also a great way to discover charts you may not know exist. It comes with this poster that many people bought for their office!
β
Dataviz caveats
A collection of the most common mistakes in chart design. Why boxplots can mislead, why pie charts are tricky, what makes spaghetti charts so hard to read.
I weave these lessons into my ggplot2 and matplotlib courses so you learn theory on top of code.
β
If you have a few minutes, it is time well spent.
β
Lumo + Quarto tips
If you know me, you know how much I love Quarto. It lets you combine code, explanations, visuals and results in a single document and it changes everything.
I created the Lumo template to make reports beautiful and wrote 30 practical tips to level up your documents.
β
If you do not use Quarto yet, my productive R workflow project will get you started fast.
β
Color palette picker
Finding a good palette is always painful. Many options exist, but they are scattered everywhere. The palette finder lets you browse hundreds and preview them on example charts.
β
With Joseph, we also built a Python package so you can use them in one line of code.
β
Productive R Workflow
I spent years writing messy R scripts with names like script_v2_final.R.
Becoming a software engineer showed me it does not have to be this way.
β
This course teaches you to write cleaner code, build better reports and work efficiently with GitHub. If you use R at work, this will change your life.
β
Matplotlib Journey and ggplot2 Uncharted
There are many courses on these libraries, but these go far deeper.
β
We focus on understanding the syntax so you can build any chart, not just basic ones.
β
Seeing what students now create thanks to both the programming and the theoretical foundations is a huge joy. Our #share-your-viz channel is lively and waiting for your work!
β
Learn Dataviz with Python or Dataviz with R.
β
β
Prtfol.com
A small tool to build your personal homepage in minutes. I am starting to see some great portfolios out there now, like Janina or Roy.
β
You should save your energy for the projects you showcase, not for the website that showcases them!
β
β
That is it!
Twelve years of mostly open source work built during nights and weekends.
I hope these resources help you create better charts in a world that needs them. β€οΈ
β
See you next week,
Yan
